Styx: Shards of Darkness and Batman: The Telltale Series are January’s Games with Gold

Microsoft has announced January’s free games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers, and they’re a tad uninspiring.

On the Xbox One side of things players can get their hands on 2017’s Styx: Shards of Darkness and 2016’s Batman: The Telltale Series. Styx: Shards of Darkness is a lesser-known stealth game from French developers Cyanide, where you must “deceive your enemies, craft deadly traps, and utilize unparalleled freedom of movement to accomplish the robbery of a lifetime”. Batman: The Telltale Series, meanwhile, is the now defunct Telltale Games’ episodic point-and-click adventure game where players “step into the fractured psyche of billionaire Bruce Wayne and his dark persona, the Batman”. Both games picked up solid reviews on release and may be worth a look considering you don’t have to spend a penny to do so.

Things are a bit more exciting on the Xbox 360 side of things, where you can grab Tekken 6 and LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. Tekken 6, which features “fast-paced action and deep character customization”, received great reviews when it released way back in 2009 (ten years ago!) and is still worth a look for fans of fighting games. LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, meanwhile, picked up similarly great reviews when it launched a whopping 13 years ago, with particular praise being directed towards its fun factor and fantastic sense of humour. As always, both games are playable on Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

Styx: Shards of Darkness will be available to download for the entire month of January, while Batman: The Telltale Series will be available from Thursday 16th January until Saturday 15th February. On the 360 side, Tekken 6 will be available to download from Wednesday 1st January until Wednesday 15th January, then LEGO Star Wars II will take over as a free offering from Thursday 16th January until Friday 31st January. Don’t forget that you can currently still download all of December’s free offerings.
