Ubisoft are aiming to add cross-play to all of their existing PvP games, according to CEO Yves Guillemot.
In an report to investors, Guillemot said that Ubi’s ultimate goal is to “put cross-play on all the PvP games that we have”, indicating that the process of adding the function to their titles is “well underway”. Notable titles which would benefit from a cross-play function include the likes of Rainbow Six Siege, For Honor, The Division 2, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and the upcoming pirate caper Skull & Bones.
Cross-play is all the rage at the moment, of course, with a number of big titles enabling the function over the last year or so. These names include the likes of Fortnite, Rocket League, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and the recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Cross-play functionality is a massive plus point for players, providing faster matchmaking times and breaking down the barrier of console choice preventing people from playing with friends on other platforms, so the more games that support cross-play the better.
Guillemot gave no idea of what kind of timescale it will take to fully implement cross-play in their games, but it’s hard to imagine that it’s too high up on their list of priorities right now. Ubisoft recently delayed three big AAA titles into their next financial year following the dramatic failure of Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and they have just promised players that they are working hard to right the wrongs and fix the game, so I would imagine that the bulk of their attention is currently focused on that.
