Subnautica: Below Zero enters early access

Below Zero, the standalone expansion for the open-world survival game Subnautica, is now available to play through early access on Steam and the Epic Games Store, and it’s got a new cinematic trailer to celebrate.

Below Zero is set one year after the original Subnautica, and it will challenge players with surviving a disaster at an alien research station in a previously unseen arctic area of Planet 4546B. Players will be able to “craft tools, scavenge for supplies, and unravel the next chapter in the Subnautica story.”

The trailer shows off some of the volatile creatures that will patrol the depths of the water, and one enormous scary-ass monster that will attack you on the land. It’s not all scary though, as there are also some adorable looking alien penguins on show. Aww. The trailer also gives us a very quick look at who I’m presuming is the games new female protagonist as she quickly flies past on a hoverbike that looks like Subnautica’s version of a Sparrow from Destiny or a Speeder Bike from Star Wars.

Buying in to the early access of the game will cost you £15.49 and will allow you to play the first few hours of Below Zero. Remember that it is early access, so don’t expect it to be a perfect representation of what the game will be at launch. Developer Unknown Worlds said “Below Zero is full of bugs, runs poorly, and includes only a small portion of our planned features.” Great advertising. Unknown Worlds predicts that early access will last for around a year before releasing in full on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

If you still want to pay £15.49 to play the first couple of hours of a broken game that runs poorly, then head on over to Steam or the Epic Games Store.
