Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove updates delayed by “several months”

Shovel Knight’s upcoming expansions, King of Cards and Showdown, have been delayed by “several months”, developer Yacht Club has announced.

The expansions were meant to be arriving on Tuesday 9th April, but they have now both been delayed until a currently unspecified date. Yacht Club is expecting the delay to be for several months, but they didn’t give any specific dates that fans can expect to finally get their hands on the latest content for the side-scroller. Speaking of new dates, Yacht Club said:

“To communicate better with everyone moving forward, we will not be announcing a new date until we know one for sure, from all partners involved. All builds shipped out, updates ready to launch, for everybody and everyone. We will announce it for good once it is 100% all across the board!”

The King of Cards expansion will add new story-focused content to the game, while Showdown will add a new multiplayer-focused modes for players to sink their teeth into. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove was going to be re-released in physical form complete with both of these updates on both PS4 and the Nintendo Switch on the same day that the updates were due to launch, but both of these physical copies have now been delayed alongside the update.

Yacht Club are putting this delay down to both the need to ensure that the updates are meeting the highest level of quality and the time constraints of trying to get all of the updates on to the physical re-releases. Speaking on the delay, Yacht Club said:

“The two, brand new, complete games coming to Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. It remains our focus to bring these to the highest level of quality just as we have with previous Shovel Knight games. It’s also our priority to have these games on the disc/card for the upcoming physical version. We need a little more time to make this happen, and so we are pushing the release back one last time. We’re still aiming to release everything at once, so this this delay applies to everything: physical editions, digital update, and Treasure Trove amiibo 3-pack.”

As you can see in that quote, this delay does also mean that the three new amiibo that were announced to release with Treasure Trove have also been delayed. Yacht Club says that support for these are connected to the release of the King of Cards update, so it’s important that they coincide with its release.

Releasing updates for Shovel Knight is no easy feat as the game is available on so many systems, including the now outdated PlayStation 3 and the Wii U. As we always say here at Buff Nerf Repeat, better for the game to be delayed to ensure it’s launched in full working order than to release an unpolished mess and fix it after. We’ll keep you updated when any new release date is announced.
