Psychonauts 2 has been delayed again, and is now expected to launch at some point in 2020.
That represents the second delay for the crowdfunded game, which was originally slated for release in 2018 before being pushed back to 2019. The further delay was announced in an update to backers by developers Double Fine, which read:
“There really shouldn’t be too many other noticeable changes for you at all, at least not for a while…with one notable exception: We’re now targeting next year for release. We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who – just like us – want the game to be as good as possible. So we’re hopeful you’ll understand! <3”
While that news is bound to frustrate some (and there have been plenty of negative responses to the news from backers), we always maintain that we would much rather developers take any extra time needed to get their game up to standard without causing any kind of crunch rather than rushing out a half-baked product that isn’t up to scratch.
The news comes amid a busy period for Double Fine, who announced back at E3 that they had been acquired by Xbox Game Studios, meaning that Psychonauts will now be published by Microsoft rather than the deeply troubled Starbreeze Studios. Any non-Xbox players who saw that news and started to panic need not worry, however, as Double Fine’s update today clarified that Psychonauts 2 will still release on all promised platforms, which includes the PlayStation 4.
Psychonauts 2 will now launch at some point in 2020 (hopefully), although no actual release date was confirmed. As always, we’ll keep you updated as soon as that information becomes available.
