PlayStation Classic game lineup announced

Last month we brought you the news that Sony was planning to release a mini version of the original PlayStation with 20 classic games preloaded that definitely isn’t a complete rip off of Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic Mini’s.

Now, Sony has announced the full list of games that will be included with the system and there are some absolute classics on it, as well as some questionable decisions. We already knew that Final Fantasy 7, Ridge Racer Type 4, Jumping Flash, Tekken 3 and Wild Arms would be included, but there’s plenty more to sink your teeth into. The full list of games is:

  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Cool Boarders 2
  • Destruction Derby
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr. Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil Director’s Cut
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

There are some serious standouts on here, such as the game that started it all, the original Grand Theft Auto. Who would have known back then that this top-down crime caper would become arguably the biggest game series in the world? Also on the list are car-carnage titles Destruction Derby and Twisted Metal, as well as classics such as the original Metal Gear Solid (Snake? Snake? SNAAAAAAAKE?), Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Rayman, Resident Evil Director’s Cut and Syphon Filter – it may be worth the cost of the console just to be able to use that taser on people again.

Despite these classics being included, there are some slightly head-scratching inclusions and some notable absences, with the likes of Battle Arena Toshinden, Cool Boarders 2 and Intelligent Qube getting the nod over some absolute PlayStation classics such as Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Castlevania, Dino Crisis, Wipeout and Gran Turismo (I could go on for a while) which all somehow miss out. I know it’s important to have some variety of genre’s so that the list appeals to everyone, but I can’t help but think that you could easily compile a list of 20 unquestionable classics that would achieve this goal.

Japan will be getting a different lineup, with (unsurprisingly) more RPG’s included:

  • Arc the Lad
  • Arc the Lad 2
  • Armored Core
  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Devil Dice (aka XI [sai])
  • Final Fantasy 7
  • G Darius
  • Gradius Gaiden
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr. Driller
  • Parasite Eve
  • Persona
  • Resident Evil
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • SaGa Frontier
  • Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo
  • Tekken 3
  • Wild Arms

The PlayStation Classic is due out on the 24th anniversary of the PlayStation’s release, December 3rd (just in time for Christmas, what a coincidence!), and is set to be priced at £90. That price seemed a bit steep when it was announced, and it still seems steep to me, no matter the lineup.
