Octopath Traveler is getting a prequel on mobile

Octopath Traveler, the critically acclaimed turn-based RPG that released on the Nintendo Switch last year is getting a prequel, this time on mobile.

It’s called Octopath Traveler: Champion of the Continent, and it’s going to be a free download with optional in-app purchases. There’s no news on a Western release date yet (it’s going to launch in Japan later this year), but it will use the same “2D-HD” visuals that the Switch game used. Champion of the Continent will be set in Orsterra much like its predecessor (or its sequel, depending on how you view things) and will feature a new cast of characters. Combat looks pretty similiar, but Square Enix will obviously have to do some fiddling to make it easy to use on touchscreen devices.

Octopath Traveler: Champion of the Continent will release for iOS and Android devices in Japan at some point in 2019, we’ll keep you updated when any more news becomes available about a Western release. As a side note, it was announced today that the original Octopath Traveler on the Nintendo Switch has shipped 1.5 million units, which is no big surprise considering that it’s one of the Switch’s best-selling games.
