Multiplayer games on the Xbox won’t require Xbox Live Gold this weekend

Xbox Live Gold is probably the best online service of any of the top three consoles, and for this weekend only you can experience it for free. That means that even if you don’t have a subscription you can play online multiplayer games with friends (or random people) online from today until February 3rd.

As you would expect, Microsoft has marketed this free play weekend with tonnes of Fortnite material, but if Fortnite isn’t your thing then please don’t be confused, as you are able to play any game you own, such as Call of Duty, PUBG, or Destiny 2. However, you won’t be able to download the free Games with Gold without a Gold subscription and, in my opinion, the free games this month are well worth the £5.99 for a months membership – Celeste, in particular, is a great game if you can handle dying repeatedly and learning from your mistakes.

This free weekend from Microsoft also aligns well with the release of EA’s Anthem demo, which is going live on the Xbox One on February 1st until February 3rd, so if you’re still undecided about pre-ordering the game (or if you simply don’t trust EA to release a good game anymore) then make sure you download the demo; from what I’ve seen so far I think it looks great, but don’t hold me to that until I’ve played it this weekend – it is EA after all.

Hopefully this demo for non-important people runs more smoothly than the VIP demo event that had various technical and server issues, some of which EA has said they have fixed. If you are an important person and you already played the demo then there’s some good news for you too, because EA has confirmed that your progress during the VIP event will be carried across to the demo for the not-so-important people, and important people can still take part in the not-so-important-people demo.
