FIFA 20 tops the physical sales charts

In possibly the least surprising news of 2019, FIFA 20 has topped the UK physical sales charts on its launch week.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, that “comfortably” makes FIFA 20 the biggest release of the year, but its physical sales are down 7% compared to those of FIFA 19. 61% of those sales came from the PS4 version of the game, with 38% coming from the Xbox One version. That leaves just 1% of sales being attributed to the Nintendo Switch version. Ouch.

FIFA’s chart success has pushed last weeks chart-topper, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, down into second place as it continues to enjoy chart success despite only being available on one platform. We’re big fans of the faithful recreation of a fondly remembered classic – you can check out our review here. Borderlands 3 has also dropped down a single place to make way for FIFA, settling for third place in this weeks chart.

Elsewhere in the top ten, Gears 5 has held firm in fourth place, while Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled has enjoyed a decent week of sales, climbing four places from ninth into fifth. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is another title to hold firm this week, keeping a grasp on sixth place, while Mario Kart 8: Deluxe has dropped five places into eighth.

That just leaves us with Sea of Thieves, Minecraft: Xbox Edition, and Forza Horizon 3 to mention, all of which have experienced considerable jumps up the charts this week, likely due to a hardware bundle that was being offered out by GAME, Amazon, and the Microsoft Store. Sea of Thieves has jumped fourteen places into seventh, Minecraft has jumped thirteen places into ninth, while Forza Horizon 3 has jumped ten places into tenth.

Interestingly, GamesIndustry.biz says that physical sales of video games rose 285% week-on-week to 816,985, but FIFA 18 sold more than that alone during its first week a couple of years back. That’s a big indicator of just how fast physical sales have dropped in the UK in recent years as gamers steer towards preferring to purchase their games digitally.

You can see the full top ten below. Remember that this chart only accounts for physical sales and is not indicative of all sales.
