Just when you thought Fortnite couldn’t get any bigger, Epic Games has announced that it will provide a $100m prize pool for competitive Fortnite in 2019.
The hard cash will be up for grabs in the Fortnite World Cup, which starts with ten weekly open qualifiers beginning on April 13th. Each week, a massive $1m can be won in these qualifiers, with the added incentive of further opportunity for big cash prizes for those who qualify for the Fortnite World Cup Finals.
These weekly tournaments will continue until the end of 2019, where Epic has stated that they will continue to award $1m in cash weekly.
New York City will play host to the finals, where the top 100 solo players and the top 50 duos teams from around the world will fight it out for their share of an eye-watering $30m prize pool. The tournament will take place over the weekend of July 26th. All players competing in the World Cup are guaranteed at least $50,000 in reward, with the solo champion taking home a life changing $3m all for themselves. This represents the largest cash prize for a single player in the history of esports. Wow.
Epic has now put up $200m in prize money for competitive Fortnite, with 2019 matching the games’s first year prize fund. We can wait to watch both the qualifiers and the World Cup play out over the coming months. With so much on the line for these players we can expect to witness some very intense moments, some heartbreak, and some absolute euphoria from the World Champion.
