Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s first season of content detailed

Activision has released the roadmap for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s first season of content, labeling it as “the biggest free content drop in Call of Duty history”.

It all kicks off when Season One begins on Tuesday 3rd December for all players on all platforms, and during the course of the season players will get free access to three new multiplayer maps, one new Ground War map, two new Gunfight maps, three new multiplayer game modes, four new Spec Ops missions, and two new weapons.

First, and perhaps most excitingly, is the addition of three new maps for the traditional multiplayer mode, which are returning classics from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, namely Crash, Vacant, and Shipment. I’m very excited about Crash in particular, having previously named it as my favourite map from the entire Modern Warfare series. Activision describes the new (old) maps as follows:

Crash (Multiplayer Map): The iconic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare map has returned with all the flanking routes and action-packed rooftop encounters you remember.

Vacant (Multiplayer Map): An abandoned office, previously visited in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, leads to intense interior combat across the complex.

Shipment (Multiplayer and Gunfight Map): The classic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare map where fast and frenetic action reigns supreme.

As you can see, the chaotic Shipment will also be available as a Gunfight map, which makes sense considering its tiny, close-quarters nature. It will be joined by two more new maps which are specific to the 2v2 mode, which are:

Cargo (Gunfight Map): An open-roof storage vessel for shipping containers, on docks of London.

Atrium (Gunfight Map): The centerpiece of a Verdansk palace, still intact despite the conflict raging nearby.

If, however, you prefer your massive battles over your small scale battles, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Ground War will also be getting a new map, which is described as follows:

Port (Ground War Map): Battle across massive shipping crates, cranes, buildings and streets in this unique Ground War map experience.

The roadmap also tells players to “look for additional maps as Season 1 progresses”, which I’m presuming means that even more maps are coming, although we don’t know exactly what they are yet. There are also new multiplayer modes coming: Reinforce is described as a “hybrid of Dom and S&D” where players compete for control of three flags with only one life each, while Infected will allow players to “hunt or be hunted in this survival party game mode”. Gunfight is also getting a new mode called On Site Procurement (O.S.P.) where players start with just fists and gather better equipment as the match progresses. Again, Activision is telling players to “look for more modes as Season 1 continues”, so expect more new game modes further down the line.

There are those amongst us who prefer to play co-op modes rather than player-versus-player, of course, so those will be pleased to hear that four new missions are coming to the Spec Ops portion of Modern Warfare. The four new missions are as follows:

Bomb Squad (Special Ops Experience): Forces still loyal to Barkov have planted explosives around the city of Al-Raab. You’re here to defuse the situation.

Grounded (Special Ops Experience): Enemies have seized Barkov’s former airbase. Engage and eliminate them.

Pitch Black (Special Ops Experience): Infiltrate Barkov’s former estate and recover all required intel before an exfill in a Tactical Rover.

Just Reward (Special Ops Experience): Your squad targets the head of an enemy financial operation, hacking his data centers, and gaining intel.

Again, Activision is teasing “more Special Ops content as Season 1 continues.”, so expect more to look forward to in the coming months.

The upcoming Battle Pass was also teased, with Activision talking about players having the opportunity to earn rewards through the free portion of the progression system, which will include new cosmetic items and two new weapons, the Ram-7 and the Holger-26. The Ram-7 is a “fully automatic bullpup Assault Rifle with integrated picatinny rails at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock”, while the Holger-26 is an “LMG spec of the Holger model rifle, with integrated sight rail and drum magazine for additional ammunition-carrying capacity”. There will, of course, also be a premium tier of the Battle Pass, and Activision is promising to give more details on this front at the start of Season One.

That’s a whole chunk of free content to look forward to, although we don’t currently know when each piece of new content will be launching, but we’ll keep you updated as and when that information becomes available.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Season One begins on Tuesday 3rd December.
