Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will support mouse and keyboard on console

If you prefer to use a mouse and keyboard when playing a first-person shooter but you’re predominately a console player then I have some good news for you – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will feature full mouse and keyboard support.

That is according to Infinity Ward’s Design Director Joe Cecot at least, who told PlayStation blog that the company would be “supporting different peripherals, so if you want to plug a keyboard [and mouse] into your PS4, you can”. However, If you’re sitting there rubbing your hands together at the prospect of logging into a match with your mouse and keyboard and absolutely rinsing a load of players who are using controllers then think again; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s matchmaking system will match players based on peripheral, which means that keyboard and mouse players will only get to play against keyboard and mouse players and controller players will only match against controller players. You can’t change your peripheral mid-game either, so don’t try and be clever.

Of course, the first concern that this throws up is matchmaking times, as it effectively splits the player base. Thankfully, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, as it will be the first entry in the series to support cross-play. That means that PC, PS4, and Xbox One players will be able to go up against each other regardless of platform, so there will be a massive player pool for the game to matchmake you with. What this news gives us is the best of both worlds, as players will be able to play the game with their peripheral of choice without there being the balance issue of a keyboard and mouse player going up against a controller player (until somebody learns how to exploit it, that is).

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will launch on Friday 25th October.
