Black Ops 4 digital launch sales are Activision’s highest ever

Activision has published a lot of big games in their time, and that makes it all the more impressive that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has become Activision’s biggest ever digital release, meaning it has beaten the likes of its predecessor Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2. Black Ops 4 also takes the title of being Activision’s biggest digital launch on all three individual platforms that it has launched on. Over on the PC side of things, Black Ops 4 more than doubled the digital launch sales of Call of Duty: WWII.

A big success for Activision then, but those facts do somewhat mask some shortfalls; physical sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 are way down on last year, 50 per cent down, in fact. Before COD fans start panicking though, it’s important to note that last years Call of Duty: WWII somewhat bucked a trend, as it became the first COD since Modern Warfare 3 to sell more physical copies than it’s predecessor at launch, but that may be because it’s predecessor was the heavily criticized Infinite Warfare. Indeed, since the roaring success of Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty’s physical sales have been on a downward spiral year after year, with the exception of the aforementioned COD: WWII. At this point, Black Ops 4’s physical launch sales make up just a staggering approximate 10 per cent of that of Modern Warfare 3.

We don’t have any official sales numbers so we don’t truly know what this means for the franchise, but it’s likely that this just represents a continual shift in the way that consumers purchase their games rather than any major sales issue for Call of Duty. After all, Black Ops 4 has still managed to claim the top spot in this weeks chart, beating FIFA 19 in second and the newly-released Assassins Creed: Odyssey which could only make third place. Elsewhere in the top 10, Forza Horizon 4 drops to fifth and, notably, GTA V drops out.

The full top 10 is as follows:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  2. FIFA 19
  3. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  4. WWE 2K19
  5. Forza Horizon 4
  6. Spider-Man
  7. Super Mario Party
  8. Crash N-Sane Trilogy
  9. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  10. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
