Axiom Verge is the next free game on the Epic Games Store

We bloody love a freebie here at Buff Nerf Repeat, so the Epic Games Store has very much been in our good books since they announced they would be giving away a free game every two weeks.

True to their word, the free games keep on coming, and the next offering will be 2015’s Axiom Verge. Axiom Verge—which will be free from February 7th until February 21st—is a side-scrolling action-adventure game which is best described as a Metroidvania game. Players control a failed scientist called Trace who dies in an accident, only to awaken in a mysterious, high-tech, alien world. Check out the trailer below:

Graphically, it’s not the best looking game, featuring graphics inspired by the 8-bit and 16-bit eras that were famous for this genre, but the game received massive critical acclaim upon release, picking up 8/10 and 9/10 scores across the board. Particular praise was aimed at the games interesting weapons, boss battles, responsive controls, upgrades and secrets.

This is another win for the Epic Games Store. When they announced that they would be giving away a free game every two weeks, people would have been forgiven for thinking that the games on offer would be nothing special, but so far they have offered gem after gem. Just a few weeks ago we got the fantastic What Remains of Edith Finch, and now Axiom Verge joins the list of great titles that Epic have given to us for absolutely nothing.

Axiom Verge will be available to download for free through the Epic Games Store from February 7th until February 21st. Don’t forget, The Jackbox Party Pack is currently available to download for the total price of bugger all until February 7th.
