Aladdin and The Lion King are being remastered for modern platforms

If you’re a fan of retro platformers then I have some great news for you, Disney’s Aladdin and The Lion King are both being remastered for modern platforms.

Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King, which is being developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Nighthawk Interactive, will bundle both 16-bit classics together for release this Autumn on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The games are being given the full 1080p treatment, and there will be various new features including customizable controls and a rewind function that will let you go back 15 seconds to correct any mistakes. There’s also a “Watch Mode” which allows you to sit back and watch a full walkthrough of each game, with the added twist that you can hop in and take control of the action at any point, and there are bonus features such as a music player (oh those glorious tunes) and a museum which will allow you to check out some behind-the-scenes content.

The bundle will also contain multiple versions of each game; the Genesis, Game Boy, and Super Game Boy versions of Aladdin will be included, as well as a “Final Cut” and a 1993 Trade Show Demo, although no specific details on those two versions are currently known. The Lion King, meanwhile, will be represented by its Sega Genesis, SNES, Game Boy, and Super Game Boy versions.

If you played either of these games back in the day (I played both religiously on my Sega when I was a kid) then you’ll know that they’re both fantastic platformers in their own right and, I would argue, are possibly two of the greatest movie tie-in games ever released. The timing of their remasters couldn’t be any better following the recent success of live-action remakes of both films in recent months (it’s almost as if they knew!), and it will be great for these great games to be introduced to a whole new generation of gamers. I’m not sure how many PS4 or Xbox One players will be overly keen, but I’m expecting it to have success on the Nintendo Switch in particular.

Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King will release for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC this Autumn. The game will be priced at $29.99.
