Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, which launched last Friday, has debuted at the top of the UK charts, according to Chart-Track.
Despite sitting at the top of the pile, The Division 2 only actually managed to shift 20% of the number of copies that it’s predecessor managed in its first week, but there are a couple of reasons (or excuses) that could be used to explain that. First of all, Chart-Track only count physical boxed copies, so with more and more people shifting their purchasing preference to digital it is quite likely that The Division 2 sold a lot more in digital format than the original did back in 2016, so the actual numbers could be a lot closer. Secondly, the original The Division launched on a Tuesday, giving it a three day head start over The Division 2’s Friday release.
Given all of that, it is likely that the actual number of sales of The Division and The Division 2 are far closer than that 20% suggests. Despite that, The Division launched with massive hype, so there is a good chance that a lot of people have opted to skip The Division 2 having felt somewhat stung by the original, which didn’t quite live up to all of its promise.
Elsewhere in the charts it’s a good week for Rockstar, as Red Dead Redemption 2 and the ever-present Grand Theft Auto V hold second and third respectively. With the season heading to an exciting conclusion people are obviously in a footballing mood, as FIFA 19 is still selling well and takes fourth spot, while The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame takes fifth, still only one place down from its debut a couple of weeks back. Devil May Cry 5, which only released last week, has dropped to sixth, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe keeping up its run in the charts by claiming seventh. Far Cry: New Dawn is still holding on to a place in the top 10, sitting in eighth, while the ever-selling Nintendo favourites Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe round out the top 10, taking ninth and tenth respectively.
If you were wondering, Anthem—which spent two weeks at the top of the charts following its release back at the end of February—has now dropped out of the top 10 completely, dropping four places into eleventh.
