Turtle Rock Studios, the team behind the first-person co-op zombie shooter Left 4 Dead, are developing a new game called Back 4 Blood.
Back 4 Blood will also be a first-person co-op zombie shooter, but despite the glaring similarities Turtle Rock are insistent that Back 4 Blood has no relation to Left 4 Dead, describing the game as “an original, premium title”. Turtle Rock are working with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to create the new game, promising to use everything they learned during the Left 4 Dead days and combining them with new ideas to push the zombie shooter genre forward, claiming that the game “marries the best of what made the co-op zombie shooter so successful with new features and state-of-the-art technology.” Speaking on the new game, Turtle Rock co-founder and Design Director, Chris Ashton, said:
“It’s hard to overstate what an awesome opportunity this is. We get to return to a genre that was born in our studio with over ten years of additional experience and zombie ideas racked up in our brains. We also have some of the best teammates in the business at WBIE who understand our development process and are equally committed to our player-first mentality. We love being able to announce, so we can start working with the community right away.”
While Ashton’s fellow co-founder Phil Robb said:
“We are not resting on any past laurels. Our goal is to take all we’ve learned and push forward. We know that’s a tall order. We’re growing the team considerably because we’re stepping up to the biggest challenge in this studio’s history. We know this title has to stand out and we fully intend to make that happen.”
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are clearly excited to be teaming up with Turtle Rock. Speaking on the new partnership, WBIE’s President David Haddad said:
“We are thrilled to partner with the proven Turtle Rock Studios team on Back 4 Blood to advance the co-op zombie genre forward with innovative multiplayer gameplay. The talented team at Turtle Rock has been developing amazing games together for a long time, and this is a great opportunity to work with them to create a new gaming universe built specifically with the large co-op zombie shooter community in mind.”
Turtle Rock Studios later posted an FAQ on their website that confirmed that the game will feature both a campaign and PvP, and although the game is very early in development and doesn’t have any release date yet, we do know that it will release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, although Turtle Rock says that other platforms “aren’t out of the question”.
Turtle Rock also used the FAQ to address the elephant in the room, answering the question “Is this Left 4 Dead 3?” with:
“No. Back 4 Blood is our own brand new, original IP. You’ll be able to shoot up a lot of zombies like in Left 4 Dead, but there’s a whole lot of new stuff in Back 4 Blood which makes it unique.”
Yeah, right.
