The next free game to be released on the Epic Game Store has been revealed – Thimbleweed Park will be available from 21st February until 7th March.
The Epic Game Store has given us some fantastic games since its launch in early December, and Thimbleweed Park is no exception. The point and click adventure joins titles such as the fantastic ocean-survival game Subnautica and the engrossing, narrative adventure game, What Remains of Edith Finch. Currently, Axiom Verge—the 2015 sci-fi shooter that’s heavily inspired by the Metroid series—is available for free on the store.
Thimbleweed Park is a spiritual successor to Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick’s classic titles Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island. It tells the story of two FBI agents named Ray and Reyes, who arrive at a town in Thimbleweed Park to investigate a murder.
Gameplay wise, Thimbleweed Park pays homage to early graphic adventure games, featuring third-person perspective and screen layout. Player actions are performed by clicking on verbs and by using items in the players inventory space. Similarly to the previously mentioned Maniac Mansion, you can also switch between five different characters in the middle of gameplay.
Thimbleweed Park was well received by critics at release and was nominated for various prestigious awards, such as best indie game in 2017. Even if you don’t consider yourself a fan of point and click adventures, we think Thimbleweed Park might just be the game to change your mind.
We’ve been full of praise for the Epic Game Store in recent weeks, not just for it’s ‘one free game every two week’ pledge, but also the stores revenue sharing model, updated refund policies, and adjusted pricing refunding. With the recent announcement that Ubisoft are planning to distribute The Division 2 (and many of its other titles) exclusively via the Epic Games Store, it’s clear to see that Epic plans to take on Steam at every opportunity.
