Mario Kart Tour, the smartphone debut of the smash hit kart-racing series, has been delayed until Summer 2019, Nintendo has announced.
Mario Kart Tour was originally intended to be released before the end of this financial year, which ends on Sunday 31st March. Eager players will now have to wait a bit longer, with the release now pushed back to an unspecified date in the Summer. Nintendo announced the news in an earnings report that they released today, saying:
“In the smart-device business, Mario Kart Tour was scheduled to be released this fiscal year, but in order to improve quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch, the release date has been moved to summer 2019. As we endeavor to develop future planned applications, we will also focus on continued service operations for applications that have already been released so that consumers can enjoy playing them for a long time.”
Delays are always frustrating for players who are looking forward to getting their hands on the game, but if it improves the quality of the game—as Nintendo says it will—then I’m always happy to wait that little bit longer. Nothing much is known about Mario Kart Tour, which was first announced almost a year ago, but players are obviously hoping that it’s true to it’s home console counterparts and isn’t riddled with microtransactions. So far the only thing we’ve seen of the game is the logo, which you can see below if you’re a big lover of logo’s and stuff.
The prospect of playing Mario Kart on my phone—either offline or online against other players—is a mouth-watering one; I’d be happy if it was up to the standard of any entry in the series, be it Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Kart 64, or even Super Mario Kart. I just hope it has a one-off fee and doesn’t restrict the gameplay experience by implementing microtransactions. Please don’t let me down, Nintendo.
We’ll keep you up to date on any further details of Mario Kart Tour as and when they become available.
