Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2 are getting remakes

Let’s be honest, the Sega Saturn was a flop; It notably never got a proper Sonic game (apart from Sonic-R, the racing game) and it was quickly dwarfed by both the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64. But that doesn’t mean that it didn’t have some really great games: Virtua Fighter, NIGHTS, Virtua Cop (my Grandad used to love shooting hostages) and perhaps most notably the Panzer Dragoon series.

Well, fans of that particular series are in for a treat, as Polish publisher Forever Entertainment has announced that they are giving the first two games in the series the remake treatment. The first, which will (unsurprisingly) be titled Panzer Dragoon: Remake will release before the end of 2019, while the second which will (unsurprisingly) be titled Panzer Dragoon II Zwei: Remake will release some time after. Forever Entertainment didn’t specify which platform the remakes would be coming to.

Forever Entertainment says that the remakes will be characterized by “completely new graphics compatible with today’s standards and several modifications of the game, making it more attractive to modern players, while remaining faithful to the original in terms of story.”

Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2 are both rail shooters, with the first releasing early on in the Saturn’s life in 1995 and it’s sequel following just a year later – both games were critically acclaimed. A third game, titled Panzer Dragoon Saga, released for the Saturn in 1998. Saga took the series in an RPG direction and the game received high critical acclaim and is largely considered to be one of the greatest games of all time, but it suffered from a very limited release in the west due to Sega’s shift of focus towards the Dreamcast and sold poorly. The series went back to its rail shooter roots in 2002 when Panzer Dragoon Orta released on the Xbox to further critical acclaim – Orta is now playable on the Xbox One via backwards compatibility.
