Black Ops 4 gets massive Operation Absolute Zero update

Treyarch has done a great job of keeping Black Ops 4 updated so far and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon; the game is getting its biggest update yet today on the PS4, with Xbox One and PC releases coming at a later date. The update—which is free for all players—will add a whole host of new features, most notably a new Specialist and a new area to the Blackout map.

The new Specialist is called Zero, and she will be available in both the competitive Multiplayer mode and Blackout once players have unlocked her by completing Tier 1 of the revamped Black Market. Zero is a highly capable and deadly hacker who possesses a piece of equipment called a Disruptor that temporarily disables enemy equipment, such as a Barricade or a Sentry Turret.

Sticking on multiplayer for a minute, three new weapons are also being added to the game, namely the Daemon 3XB SMG, the SWAT RFT Assault Rifle and a Secret Santa melee weapon; how very festive. Along with these weapons there are also new Camos, Reactive Camos, and Reticles to unlock. All of these new additions can be unlocked via the Contraband tiers in the revamped Black Market, which Treyarch says has been “streamlined” to make Tier progression “simpler and more rewarding”. These items can also be immediately accessed in Blackjack’s Gun Gameone of the new Featured Multiplayer playlistsor through Blackout weapon drops.

Speaking of Blackout, the fantastic battle royale mode is getting its first big map change. Hijacked—which is inspired by the classic Black Ops 2 map—has been added to the northwest quadrant of the map, allowing players to do battle on a luxury yacht. Most players will be eager to check out the new area sooner rather than later, so expect Hijacked to be a busy area for a while – drop here at your own risk. There’s also a new vehicle, named the ARAV, which appears to be an armored car with a turret-mounted machine gun on the back, similar to the Warthog from Halo. Blackout is also getting some visual improvements, ranging from “seasonal changes in foliage and softer winter lighting, to new smoke trails to better indicate where everyone is dropping.” There are also environmental improvements coming to Nuketown Island, Hydro Dam, and Factory.

Zombies isn’t being completely ignored, with the cooperative mode receiving new daily challenges as well as Daily Callings, a Daily Tier Skip on the Black Market and the new Black Ops Authenticity Stamp which will track numerous stats including kills, deaths, downs, revives, headshots and rounds survive.

If all of this isn’t enough for you then you’ll be glad to hear that the game is also getting a seasonal event which will start on Thursday. This event will add things like Special Event Tiers, festive decorations, and throwable Snowballs to Blackout, as well as adding the Winter Calling event to Zombies which will give players the opportunity to unlock seasonal personalization rewards.

All of this, and that’s not all of it! You can read the full list of changes here, and you can view a trailer below that will give you a glimpse at some of these new additions.

The update is live now on PS4 but Treyarch is yet to announce a release date for the Xbox One or PC versions. Given the week-long exclusivity rights that Sony hold, I’d expect the update to drop on the Xbox One and the PC this time next week.
