Marvel’s Avengers has been delayed until Friday 4th September, developer Crystal Dynamics has announced.
That represents a pretty hefty four month delay for the upcoming superhero caper, which was originally planned to launch on Friday 15th May. In a statement earlier today, Crystal Dynamics Co-Heads of Studio Scot Amos and Ron Rosenberg spoke about how the delay would allow them to deliver their vision for the game:
“At Crystal Dynamics our ambition has always been to deliver the ultimate Avengers gaming experience. In order to achieve that goal, we have made the difficult decision to move the release date of Marvel’s Avengers to September 4, 2020.
As fans ourselves, it’s an honor and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world. When we set out to bring you our vision for Marvel’s Avengers, we committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come. To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.
The worldwide teams working on Marvel’s Avengers sincerely appreciate the support you’ve shown us. We thrive on your enthusiasm and feedback and we can’t wait to show you more. We apologize for the delay. We’re confident it will be worth the wait.”
The delay is another kick in the teeth for the game, which has already had a somewhat troubled promotional period. The looks of the characters was pretty heavily criticized when it was first shown back at E3 (we mocked them ourselves at around the 55-minute mark in Episode 33 of our podcast), and a small number of players who have already got their hands on the game in some behind-closed-doors sessions have given a pretty mixed reception. Hopefully this delay will allow Crystal Dynamics to refine the game and deliver an experience that lives up to the movies.
Marvel’s Avengers will launch for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia on Friday 4th September 2020.
