Ghost Recon: Breakpoint announced

Ubisoft has officially confirmed Ghost Recon: Breakpoint for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

That official announcementwhich came earlier tonightcame as absolutely no surprise following a leak earlier today which all but confirmed the game anyway, but it’s always good to get official word straight from the horses mouth. Breakpoint will be the next main entry in the series following Ghost Recon: Wildlands which released back in 2017, and it looks like it’ll take the series back to its stealthier roots rather than the over-the-top action of Wildlands.

The reason for that is because in Breakpoint players will assume the role of the hunted rather than the hunter. You’re sent to the fictional Pacific island of Auroa to investigate the loss of communication with Skell Technology, a corporation that develop AI drone technology on the island. When you get there, you find that both the island and the drones are under the control of The Wolves, a dangerous paramilitary group under the command of Major Cole D. Walker. If that name sounds familiar, that is because Major Cole D. Walker is the character played by Jon Bernthal (Shane from The Walking Dead/The Punisher) who was added to Ghost Recon Wildlands last week as part of Operation Oracle, which we now know acts as a prelude to Breakpoint.

Unsurprisingly, The Wolves are out to get you, so your survival will rely much more on stealth than all out warfare. There will be new game mechanics to suit the change in approach, such as the ability to cover yourself in mud to stay camouflaged. You’ll also be able to pick people or bodies up, either to hide an enemy body from sight or to remove an injured squad mate from danger. There will also be some survival mechanics too, with serious injuries requiring treatment to be healed and weapons requiring maintenance to remain at full working order.

The game will also feature a class system with four classes available to launch, with each class providing their own unique weapons, perks, and abilities. As you’d expect, the game will feature both solo and co-op play, but much like Wildlands, I would expect the game to be a significantly better experience when played in co-op. Structured PvP will also be available at launch, if you prefer shooting other players rather than working with them.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint will launch for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on Friday 4th October, and pre-ordering the game will give you access to the beta test later this year.
