Sony rules out releasing a new console within the next year

Sony has ruled out releasing the next PlayStation console before the end of April 2020.

That’s according to a tweet from Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki, following comments made by a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson after Sony’s earnings report earlier today, during which they also committed to heavily reinvesting profits into the development of their next console.

Mark Cerny, chief architect of the next PlayStation console, recently detailed some of the specifications that the console will have, such as the inclusion of an SSD, the support of 8k visuals, and the fact that it will still support physical media. Those comments led many people to think that the PS5 (if it is to be called that) could be released sooner rather than later, so these latest comments will come as a disappointment to some. Sony hasn’t ruled out releasing a new console in 2020 entirely though, so there’s every chance that it could release later next year, possibly in the popular Autumn/Fall period so that it lands in time for Christmas.

During Sony’s earnings report, they also announced that the PS4 sold 17.8m over the last year, which is a slight drop from the 19m that were sold the year before. Those sales figures mean that the PS4 has now sold a whopping 96.8 million copies, so it will definitely hit the 100m sold milestone soon, capping off a fantastic generation for Sony.
