Slime Rancher is currently free on the Epic Games Store, and Oxenfree is coming

Epic has announced the two latest freebies that they’re offering out on the Epic Games Store – Slime Rancher and Oxenfree.

Slime Rancher, the colourful open world game from indie studio Monomi Park is available to download for the total price of bugger-all right now. In Slime Rancher, the player controls Beatrix LeBeau, a “plucky, young rancher who sets out for a life a thousand light years away from Earth”. Settling on a planet called the Far Far Range, the player tries to amass a fortune by living life as a “slime rancher”, which yes, means catching, raising, and breeding slimes. Throughout your journey with the game, players will “Collect colourful slimes, grow crops, harvest resources, and explore the untamed wilds through the mastery of your all-purpose vacpack”, which essentially makes you a madwoman with a hoover.

Slime Rancher can be downloaded right now through Epic’s Store until Thursday 21st March.

Then, Oxenfree will take over as the free offering until Thursday 4th April. Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller from Night School Studio that puts players in the shoes of Alex, a “rebellious teenager who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on an old military island.” Things don’t exactly go to plan, as you “unwittingly open a ghostly gate spawned from the island’s cryptic past”. From here, exactly how things unfold is up to you, as the player is given numerous dialogue options that can be selected at any time during conversations or even not at all, with player choice affecting character relationships. Oxenfree features several endings, with player choices and character relationships determining which ending you get. Inspired by classic teen films and series, Oxenfree features great dialogue that is fantastically voice acted.

Slime Rancher was originally released in early access in January 2016 before getting its full release in August 2017, while Oxenfree debuted alongside Slime Rancher’s early access release in January 2016. As you can see, both games are a few years old now, but both received great reviews on release and are well worth checking out, particularly considering the fact that they’re free – you have nothing to lose. To put things into perspective, both games would currently set you back £14.99 each on Steam.

These free offerings from Epic Games have been absolutely fantastic. Not a single bad game has been offered so far, and although they haven’t been what many would probably label as a “must-have” game (and I’m sure some people will have looked at the titles and thought “never heard of it”), they have all been indie gems that people may well have skipped the first time around.

Slime Rancher is available for free right now until Thursday 21st March. Oxenfree will then become available on that very same day, lasting as a free offering until Thursday 4th April.
