Respawn shows off first gameplay footage of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Respawn Entertainment has used E3 to give players their first glimpse at some gameplay footage of their upcoming title, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which is due to release for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on Friday 15th November.

The 15 minute shows player character Cal Kestis and his trusty companion, BD-1, infiltrating an imperial base to free some captured Wookies at the request of Saw Gerrera, who’s portrayed in the game by Forest Whitaker, reprising his role from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The demo showed numerous aspects of the gameplay, including platforming elements, use of the force, and combat. From what I’ve seen, the game looks a lot like a combination of a number of successful games, all rolled into one and given a Star Wars makeover. The lightsaber combat looks very Sekiro-esque but a bit more forgiving, with dodging of importance and powerful enemies requiring blocking and countering to defeat. It looks fun, although the AI didn’t look great and it looked a bit too easy, but obviously that could be intentional for the sake of the demo.

The platforming elements, which included wall running and climbing, look heavily inspired by the likes of the Uncharted series or the rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy. As for the force powers, they look pretty fun to use; the demo showed off the usual ones that you’d expect, including a push, pull, lightsaber throw, and the ability to freeze laser blasts, which Cal uses at one point to pull a stormtrooper into his own laser blast. Check out the gameplay video below:

While it’s great to finally see some actual gameplay footage of Respawn’s highly anticipated title, I have to admit that I’m a little bit underwhelmed. Respawn has done a great job of creating a lot of hype for this game, and while all the games that it appears to draw inspiration from are tremendous in their own right, Jedi: Fallen Order currently looks like it does very little new. Still, as long as it does a good job of imitating the likes of Uncharted, Tomb Raider, and Sekiro then it will still be a great game even if it does offer little new, and there have been very few truly great Star Wars games over the years.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order releases on Friday 15th November for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
