Fortnite Season 8 has now begun

Fortnite’s Season 8 has started, bringing with it a new patch that adds a new Battle Pass, new locations, new weapons, and more.

The new locations include Lazy Lagoon, Sunny Steps, and the Volcano, which brings with it Lava that deals 1 damage per touch and Volcanic Vents, which boost players and vehicles into the sky.

Weapons wise, the update adds a Pirate Cannon—which ties into the Pirate theme of the Season—that fires cannonballs (obviously) which can go through a number of objects. A direct hit from a cannonball will cause 100 Damage to enemies, and enemies that are within the area of impact will take 50 Damage. If you need to get across the map quickly and you have a Pirate Cannon handy then you can even climb into the cannon yourself and launch yourself across the map like you’re working at the circus.

As always, some items have been vaulted, and the victims of this update are the Sneaky Snowman, Chiller Grenade, X-4 Stormwing, Shopping Cart, and the All Terrain Kart. There have also been some tweaks to the availability of high tier Assault Rifles, which the chance of picking up Legendary, Epic, and Rare quality Assault Rifle’s all lowered slightly. To compensate, the chance of receiving a Common or Uncommon quality Assault Rifle has been increased.

Aside from all of the usual “new location, new weapon” additions, there’s also a cool new feature that’s been added. Party Assist will allow you to complete Daily or Weekly challenges with the help of the members of your party – just enable Party Assist prior to a match and your party members will contribute to the progress of your selected challenge.

Two limited time modes are also currently available. “50V50” will, unsurprisingly, see two teams of fifty players battling it out for victory, with Farming materials increased by 25% and Chests & Ammo Crates spawning more often than usual. The second limited time mode, “Close Encounters”, gives all players a Jetpack from the get-go and litters the map with nothing but Shotguns, so you’ll have to get up close and personal to take out your enemies.

Another notable new feature is the ability to add “World Markers”, which essentially allows you to ping items to display an items icon and rarity. It’s a quality of life change that is one of the most praised features of Apex Legends, and I can’t help but think that Epic has just completely copied it. You can’t blame them for that though, as anybody who has played Apex Legends will tell you that it’s such a good feature that it’s hard to imagine a battle royale game not having it.

As always, there’s also a new Battle Pass that will cost 950 V-Bucks, giving players the opportunity to unlock over 100 new cosmetic rewards across 100 levels. Cosmetic items that are up for grabs this season include Blackheart, Hybrid, and a Bananaman. No, not that Bananaman, just a Bananaman.
