Dr. Mario World will release on Wednesday 10th July

Dr. Mario World will be released for iOS and Android devices on Wednesday 10th July, Nintendo has confirmed.

Ninty announced the release date in a new YouTube video for the game that also shows how the game will play. In a slight change from the usual Dr. Mario formula, medicine capsules will float upwards rather than downwards, but players will still be tasked with lining up the capsules with similarly coloured viruses.

As you can imagine with a mobile game of this nature, the game will be monetized in a number of familiar ways. You’ll only have a certain number of capsules per game, and your ability to play a game will be limited by how many hearts you have; each game will cost one heart to play, and you can only hold a maximum of five at any time, although you do recover one heart every thirty minutes. If you run out of capsules or hearts then you can add more by spending coins which are earned in-game (presumably at a slow rate) or Diamonds, which act as the games premium currency. Going by the video, Diamonds can seemingly be bought in set amounts for the following costs:

  • 20 Diamonds = $1.99
  • 53 Diamonds = $4.99
  • 110 Diamonds = $9.99
  • 250 Diamonds = $19.99
  • 550 Diamonds = $39.99
  • 1050 Diamonds = $69.99

To put that into game terms, the video also shows five extra capsules costing 10 diamonds, and five hearts will cost you the same, or you can spend 30 diamonds for an hour of infinite play. That means that buying five extra capsules or hearts will essentially cost you $1, and an hour of infinite play will cost you $3. You can also use your diamonds to buy in-game items and power-ups, or you can purchase extra doctors to play asincluding Peach, Toad, Luigi, and Yoshiall of who have their own special abilities. There will be five worlds available to play at launch, but Nintendo is promising to add more levels to the game over time.

Essentially, the game sounds exactly as we all expected – a Dr. Mario-skinned addictive mobile game along the same lines as the likes of Candy Crush Saga. I’m expecting Nintendo to make a lot of money out of this one.

Dr. Mario World will release for Android and iOS on Wednesday 10th July.
