Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s fantastic battle royale mode, Blackout, will get its first new map tomorrow on PS4.
It’s quite appropriately called Alcatraz, and it’s set on the island after which it’s named. Players can expect to do battle through the famous prison that occupies the island, on a map that is largely inspired by both the Mob of the Dead and Blood of the Dead zombies maps. Check out the trailer below:
Treyarch are describing the new map as “close quarters battle royale”, so I’d expect it to offer a more fast-paced, frantic, non-stop action game of Blackout compared to the slower-paced games of the standard Blackout map. The trailer shows players being chased through the corridors of the prison by a horde of zombies, suggesting that the new map will unsurprisingly still see players doing battle against the undead as well as other players, so things could get hectic quite quickly.
Although there has been no official word from Treyarch yet, I’m expecting the Alcatraz map to feature less players than the traditional Blackout map. Alcatraz looks much smaller than his bigger brother, so it would make sense to lower the player count on the new map so that things aren’t too chaotic.
When I think about Alcatraz, I usually think of either Nicolas Cage in The Rock or the great Alcatraz mission from Rainbow Six 3. Will the new Blackout map be good enough to hold a similarly fond place in my heart? I’ll let you know.
Treyarch says that the new map will be available tomorrow on PS4, with a release on other platforms “to follow”. As has been the case throughout Black Ops 4’s lifespan, I’d expect that release on other platforms to come exactly one week later, on Tuesday 9th April.
