Amazon Game Studios is co-developing a free-to-play massively-multiplayer online role-playing game set in The Lord of the Rings universe.
Amazon will be making the game alongside Athlon Games, who originally announced that they were developing a The Lord of the Rings game last September. At the time, Athlon described the game as being set “at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.” This suggests that the game will be completely unrelated to Amazon’s upcoming live-action The Lord of the Rings TV series which will be set during the Second Age, but it’s hard not to think that they will be hoping to tie both projects together somehow so that they can promote each other.
Amazon Game Studios input into the game will be conducted by a team of MMO veterans who have taken part in the development of games such as Destiny, Everquest, and World of Warcraft, so it’s safe to say that the project should be in safe hands. That same team of developers is also currently working on Amazon’s upcoming original MMO known as New World.
Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV series is currently slated for a 2021 release, but no release date or platform availability has been given for the MMO as of yet.
