The Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling US console of this generation

Things just seem to keep getting better and better for Nintendo. The Nintendo Switch is officially the fastest-selling console of this generation in the US.

That’s according to a report by The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. According to the report, the Nintendo Switch has sold 8.7 million units since its launch in March 2017 through to November 2018. This beats the sales numbers of both the PS4 and the Xbox One in the US at this same point in their life cycles.

That’s quite an achievement for a console (and a company) that have somewhat been completely written off in recent times, with most people believing that the console war is now only really contested by Microsoft and Sony. The Switch is a fantastic console, allowing players to seamlessly switch between using it as a home console or as a portable handheld console, a niche which has clearly made Nintendo’s machine appeal to a mass audience. As always with Nintendo, the console is backed by some sensational in-house titles such as Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

If those phenomenal titles weren’t enough, the Switch’s sales have also undoubtedly been given a massive boost recently with the releases of a number of highly-anticipated high profile games such as Super Mario Party, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which has become both the fastest-selling Switch game of all time and the fastest-selling game in the Smash Bros. series.

It’s not all in-house titles though, with a number of massive games making their debut on the Switch in recent times, such as Diablo 3: Eternal Collection and Warframe. Things are likely to get even better for Nintendo too; it was recently announced that Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 will be a Nintendo Switch exclusive and that it will release next year, allowing for maximum Avengers: Endgame cash-in potential.

Reacting to the news, the unbelievably appropriately named Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing (quite the job title, isn’t it?) said:

“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch. We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”

Unfortunately, his colleagues Johnny Mario and Dave Luigi were unavailable for comment.
