Atlas—the pirate MMO by the guys who brought you Ark: Survival Evolved—was meant to be releasing tomorrow, but Grapeshot Games has announced over on the games Steam page that Atlas has been delayed until December 19th.
Atlas is an early access title (I dread them, honestly) that was announced at last weeks Game Awards. It looks like the game that Sea of Thieves was meant to be, with the developer boasting that it would support up to 40,000 players on one server in a world that is 1,200 times the size of Ark: Survival Evolved. Players will be able to “conquer territory, construct ships, search for buried treasure, assemble forts, plunder settlements and hire crew to join your armada”, and the games page also mentions the ability to explore sunken wrecks as well as unearth loot from procedurally-generated Treasure Maps and challenge zones. Does it sound too good to be true? Possibly, and I’ve always found that if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
That’s all speculation on my part though, and we’ll find out more when the game releases on its new date of December 19th. It appears that Grapeshot Games is intending to use this time to check through the vast array of content. In their announcement they said:
“It’s a vast virtual world out there across the ATLAS, and the team’s going to use that extra time to review every portion of it thoroughly. We’re sorry about the delay, and we know how much everyone is looking forward to establishing their empires!”

As much as I dread early access titles, and as much as I think Atlas sounds too good to be true, I can’t deny that the trailer makes the game look really damn cool. Check it out below:
We’ll see how Atlas fares up once it launches next week (if it doesn’t get delayed again, of course). In the meantime, I guess I’ll start sharpening my cutlass in preparation. Let’s hope that Atlas is a shiny piece of treasure rather than a piece of scrap that’s best left at the bottom of the ocean.
