It’s no surprise considering the hype the game has had, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has topped the UK physical sales chart. What’s not as obvious though, is that Smash Bros has actually outsold every other Switch game in its first week, including the likes of Zelda and Mario, and even the combined sales of Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. I’m especially surprised that it outsold Zelda – this is one of the highest rated games of the past decade, and Zelda games are always the lead title for any Nintendo console.
It’s also the best UK launch for any game in the Smash series; more than 300 per cent higher than the game’s Wii U version, and more than 60 per cent higher than Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii which, don’t forget, is one of the best-selling consoles of all time. It’s worth highlighting that this only includes physical sales, if digital sales were also included then we would expect these numbers to be far higher.
This is a much needed win for Nintendo. The Switch has proved to be a popular console, but Nintendo has some high year end sales targets that they need to hit, which should be made easier with the popularity of Smash Bros.
Just Cause 4—which released last week—had disappointing sales figures in the UK, being over 60 percent down when compared to Just Cause 3, a gap that digital downloads wouldn’t have been able to fill. However, Square Enix’s fun open world game might be on a lot of peoples Christmas lists, so let’s see how it does over the next few weeks.
