Studio Wildcard, the team behind Ark: Survival Evolved, has unveiled their new game at The Game Awards, and it will be a massively multiplayer online pirate game called Atlas. The game will launch in Steam Early Access on December 13th before making its way to the Xbox Preview Program next year. Although the game has been announced by Studio Wildcard, development has been undertaken by sister-company Grapeshot Games, while Wildcard will continue their work on Ark.
Atlas looks like a very ambitious game, with it’s Steam page claiming that the game will support up to 40,000 people exploring the same Globe simultaneously, on a map that is 1,200 times the size of Ark: Survival Evolved. In your new pirate life you’ll be able to “conquer territory, construct ships, search for buried treasure, assemble forts, plunder settlements and hire crew to join your armada”. The games page also mentions the ability to explore sunken wrecks as well as unearth loot from procedurally-generated Treasure Maps and challenge zones, which sounds interesting. Check out the trailer below:
Atlas looks like a massive game with enormous scale and ambition, but I can’t help but think it could be too ambitious. Although it looks like the game that Sea of Thieves should have been, we have to bear in mind that this is, once again, an early access title from Studio Wildcard, so it could fall a long way short of how the trailer makes it look. I guess we’ll find out more come next Thursday.
