Battlefield V Delayed

EA has confirmed today that their upcoming World War 2 shooter, Battlefield V, has been delayed by a month.

Originally slated for a release date of October 19th, the game has now been pushed back until November 20th.

In a statement confirming the news on the EA website, DICE General Manager Oskar Gabrielson wrote “We’re going to take the time to continue to make some final adjustments to core gameplay, and to ensure we really deliver on the potential of Tides of War.” He continued, “We know moving the launch date means that we all have to wait a little longer. But we’re going to take our time to make sure we get it right.”

The “Tides of War” that Gabrielson refers to is Battlefields brand new “games as a service” plan that is a direct replacement for any kind of Season Pass or paid expansions.

The statement also confirmed that the Open Beta for Battlefield V will still go ahead as originally planned on September 6th.

I’m split on what I think about this news – on the one hand it’s nice to hear of a developer pushing their game back to take more time to fine-tune their product and make sure it delivers to its full potential when it’s released, on the other hand, the skeptic in me can’t help but think this may be more about finding a better window of release to maximise sales.

Battlefield V’s original release date of October 19th dropped the game right smack bang in-between the releases of its most direct rival Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (October 12th) and the most highly anticipated game of the year, Red Dead Redemption 2 (October 26th). With reports swirling that Battlefield V’s pre-order numbers are below expectations, it’s hard not to to think that EA may have pushed the release date back to give it a clearer window of opportunity.
