No Man’s Sky update adds the ability to create music

HelloGames has released a new update for No Man’s Sky, adding an audio creation tool to the game.

Known as Update 2.24, the new update adds the ability to create what HelloGames is calling the ByteBeat Device. To create one you’ll first have to get hold of the blueprint from the Space Anomaly, and then you can pop one down in your base where it will immediately begin to spit out its own prodecurally generated tune. From here, you’ll be able to adjust things as much as you like – you can let it play its own tune, or you can alter the melody, drums, octave, key, or tempo. If you want to do even more than that then you can use the Advanced Waveform UI to “fine tune the mathematical operators at the heart of their sound”, which basically means you can create your own unique sound. Check out a trailer below, which triggers memories of playing Music on the PS1 (remember that game? it was awesome).

The ByteBeat Device can also be synchronised with other ByteBeats to layer multiple tracks together, allowing you to create more complex arrangements. You can also connect your ByteBeat Device to other devices such as lights, which will create a light show which is automatically synced up to the rhythm of your track. Here’s what HelloGames said about the ByteBeat Device:

“Base building is a big part of what people spend their time doing in our game, and a frequent request is for the ability to add sounds and music to their construction. Our team always likes a creative challenge, and audio is one of our big passions. Over the last few weeks one of our coders got obsessed with making an audio creation tool for the community, we were so excited about it we thought it’d be a nice surprise to release it.

Once placed in your base and powered, the ByteBeat will immediately begin to produce sound. ByteBeat formulas are made out of simple waveforms that are manipulated through maths – but by default, the device handles all of the mathematical heavy lifting, procedurally generating random presets for you to play with. Dedicated audiophiles have the option to explore deeper, manually sketching out note sequences, rhythms, and even manipulating the raw sounds.”

No Man’s Sky’s Update 2.24 is available right now on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
