Blizzard has used the opening ceremony of this years BlizzCon to officially announce Diablo 4.
The latest entry in the classic dungeon crawler series was announced with two new trailers. The first is a lengthy and visually stunning cinematic trailer which aptly displays the games dark tone. Diablo IV will take place “many years after the events of Diablo III, after millions have been slaughtered by the actions of the High Heavens and Burning Hells alike.”
Check out the cinematic trailer below if you’ve got ten minutes spare:
The word ‘dark’ is one that was used a lot during the Diablo 4 announcement, with game director Luis Barriga pointing out that Blizzard want to take Diablo 4 back to “the franchise’s darker roots”. Sanctuary will be involved again, and this time the game will feature both friendly towns and PvP zones where you can battle other players, a feature which was sorely missed in Diablo 3.
The cinematic trailer was accompanied by a much shorter gameplay trailer, showing off some of the playable classes and features which will be included. You’ll be able to play as a Barbarian, Sorceress, or Druid among others, and it would appear that players will be able to get hold of mounts to help them travel the world quicker. It looks a lot more Diablo 2-esque in my opinion, which is most definitely a good thing. Check it out below:
Blizzard says that “hellish new features, brutal challenges, and an indisputable return to darkness” lie at the core of Diablo 4 – like I said, it’s definitely going to be dark. The news of Diablo 4’s announcement comes as no great surprise following months of rumour, speculation, and leaks about the games development, but it’s always good to get official confirmation. What a way to kick off BlizzCon.
Diablo 4 will launch for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, although no release date was given.
