Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is ditching the Prestige system

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is ditching the series traditional Prestige system, Activision has announced.

This is a pretty big deal considering that the Prestige system has been a mainstay in Call of Duty titles ever since it was introduced in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare back in 2007, and it’s an announcement that comes shortly after Activision announced that it was also ditching loot boxes in favour of a Battle Pass System this year in a further shakeup for the series.

Call of Duty’s usual Prestige system allows players who have reached max level to reset their rank and progression and start all over again, putting players back to Rank 1 and forcing them to unlock all of their weapons, perks, attachments, and killstreaks again in return for a shiny new emblem to show off. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, however, things are going to work a little differently.

When you first start playing the game you will begin in the Enlisted Ranks as a Private, which is Rank 1. From there you will rank up as normal until you reach Command Sergeant Major V, which is Rank 55, unlocking weapons, equipment, perks, and killstreaks as you go. Once you have reached Rank 55, you will not be able to Prestige and your “functional items” (which means weapons, equipment, perks, killstreaks etc) will NEVER be re-locked.

Instead, players will progress into Officer Ranks, which act as a seasonal ranking system for players to progress through, offering 100 ranks and rewards to unlock along the way, such as a cosmetic Weapon Blueprint that you’ll receive for reaching Officer Rank 1. Levelling up your Officer Rank will work exactly the same as levelling up your Enlisted Rank, but you’ll unlock a new Officer Challenge with every rank, giving you the opportunity to earn a bunch of XP and a Seasonal Ribbon on completion. Once you earn yourself 10 ribbons you will unlock a special Season Emblem, and each additional 10 ribbons will evolve your emblem until you unlock all 100 ribbons, which will then give you an animated Emblem to show off as proof of your achievement for that season. Reaching the maximum Officer Rank (100) will unlock you another cosmetic Weapon Blueprint.

Once a season ends, your Officer Rank will be reset back to Rank 1 and you start again for the new season, but any Officer Rank, Officer Challenge Ribbon, or Season Emblem that you have achieved will be permanently recorded in the game, and your unlocked items such as weapons, attachments, perks, and killstreaks will stay with you as begin your progression in the new Officer Rank progression track. As we already know, each new Season will bring with it new maps, modes, missions, and events, all of which will be free for all players on all platforms at the same time.
