Gwent RPG

Gwent adding 30-hour long standalone RPG

From being a game within a game, to an impressive and hugely popular standalone title – Gwent has come a long way so far during its relatively short lifespan, and it seems CD Projekt Red have no intention of resting on their laurels.

During a financial results conference which the studio streamed live on Twitch, CD Projekt Red announced that the much anticipated ‘Thronebreaker’ expansion will be released as a standalone RPG alongside Gwent, and will not be the predicted Gwent story mode. The game will now be renamed ‘Thronebreaker: The Witchers Tales’

From the information we took from the conference, the game will be an RPG first and foremost, with card playing elements coming secondary; the complete opposite of what people would have predicted. Thronebreaker will feature RPG-like decision making, with combat and other mechanics revolving around the familiar card slinging action of Gwent.

Whilst Gwent will continue with its free-to-play model, Thronebreaker will be a separate retail release. No information on the price has been announced so far, but we think it’s fairly safe to say Thronebreaker will be released at a lower price than most full games.

A release date for Thronebreaker has not been announced yet. However, the game is on track to launch alongside Gwent, which is currently undergoing a big rework based on fan feedback. Currently, the two games are targeting a Q4 release. We for one can’t wait.
